Singling out any one penthouse as “Israel’s most extraordinary” seems a tad chancy, but in this instance the risk is surely minimal. With an asking price of 65 million USD (NIS 208 million), the penthouse is a property that is appropriate for its broker, Israel Sotheby’s International Realty.

“We select the projects and assets we represent judiciously, ensuring they conform with global Sotheby standards, and take great care to maintain the prestige of the Sotheby’s brand,” says Itay Gurevich, Israel Sotheby’s marketing director.

Launched in 1976 by Sotheby’s (then as now, one of the world’s largest dealers in art, jewelry, watches, wine and spirits, interiors and collectibles), its international luxury real estate branch today has over 25,000 professional agents in more than 1,000 offices in 80 countries. In Israel, where Sotheby’s has operated since 2012, it has brokered an extensive inventory of luxury real estate and homes Israel’s most exclusive cities — Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Herzliya Pituach, Jerusalem and Caesarea among them.

A classic Sotheby’s project is the extraordinary Jaffa Penthouse, atop the Jaffa Hotel in Old Jaffa, listed by Sotheby’s Shelly Shmelzer. Entering it is akin to walking into a work of modern art — albeit one where you feel instantly relaxed, comfortable and at home. Rich, natural and warm Mediterranean stone and marble combine with pale wood floors, absorbing the light that floods through large windows, which look out across the Mediterranean, Old Jaffa and the Tel Aviv skyline.

The living area is large — covering 1,400 square meters or roughly three basketball courts, with a 750-square meter rooftop terrace, the size of two more, modeled by landscape architect, Mohr Avidan — yet it feels intimate. It has six bedrooms (one a master bedroom suite), seven bathrooms, a kitchen with central island by German kitchen manufacturer Bulthaup, a wine lounge, study, gym and solarium, as well as lounge and dining area.

“It’s a true architectural masterpiece,” says Shelly Shmelzer. “Its space is layered and interlaced, so despite its size it’s cozy and private. Its designers, the internationally known Pitsou Kedem Architects and Baranowitz & Goldberg Architects, have juxtaposed old and new, history and modernity, echoing both traditional Jaffa masonry and sleek modern materials — a bridging of old and new accentuated by the materials, finishes, fabrics and custom-made furniture.”

“Even in the grandest of projects,” according to the architects, “the human scale is the most important factor. This penthouse, with its vast breadth of space, led us to think about shapes, division and proportion to complement the juxtaposition of old and new with a true sense of home. Stone sculptural partitions create separations between the different spaces, which, on one hand, divide and, on the other, connect, allowing a beautifully framed glance of what lies beyond.”

And if that isn’t enough, penthouse residents have access to the five-star Jaffa Hotel’s facilities — its L. RAPHAEL spa, swimming pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, lounges and events hall, concierge services, private parking and room service provided by Jaffa Hotel’s restaurants.

With The Jaffa Penthouse, as with all its properties, Israel Sotheby’s Real Estate offers investors, entrepreneurs and foreign and local residents a comprehensive package. “We provide an experienced, knowledgeable and trustworthy agent-client support system from valuation of the property to business and legal advice to money transfer services, all driven by our aim to unite our clients with their perfect property.” says Shelly Shmelzer.
