In the modern worlds of defense and aviation, where threats are becoming faster and more complex, the importance of advanced ceramics is critical beyond measure. For example, advanced ceramics currently constitute the backbone of the armor, ultra-high-speed aviation and space industries, alongside a variety of industrial and technological applications. This is due to a rare combination of weight up to three times lower than steel, and exceptional resistance to wear, corrosion and extreme heat loads. Whether it involves personal armor plates that save the lives of soldiers from armor-piercing bullets, or ultra-high-speed aviation and missile technology, where temperatures reach thousands of degrees – ceramic technology is what separates strategic resilience from vulnerability. At the heart of this endeavor in Israel stands the Israeli company Paxis Advanced Ceramic Solutions, a unique company in the local and global landscape due to its independent development, which is advancing the field of ceramic materials in Israel.

Paxis has been manufacturing and selling for 12 years from its base in the Tefen industrial park, a Priority A zone, located near Carmiel and Ma'alot. The company employs dozens of workers in diverse roles such as materials and mechanical engineers, quality control, marketing and sales, production workers and more.

In addition to being a manufacturing company, Paxis boasts an exceptional proportion of engineers and scientists among its total workforce. Leading this technological array and also responsible for opening innovative technological avenues is Vladi Kushnirov Melnitzer, the company's head of engineering and R&D department. A materials engineer and chemist, he is a graduate of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion. In addition to scientific excellence, the company champions social values such as promoting the status of women and employment diversity across nationalities and religions. "In our engineering team, there are currently only female engineers. Many of the company's employees, male and female, have been combining intensive work with significant reserve duty since October 7."

Personalized Protection

The company's main product line today is ceramic armor against gunfire, intended for high-end applications for personal protection, vehicles, aviation, maritime, and other advanced security applications. Paxis manufactures the critical ceramic component for armor with improved performance and lower weight than competitors, meeting the highest levels according to accepted international standards and even exceeding them. The ceramics, combined with additional material systems, provide protection against the toughest threats on the battlefield.

Paxis's uniqueness in the Israeli market lies, as mentioned, in its independent development capability. Paxis controls the entire value chain – from modifying material composition, through process engineering, to geometric design. "The armor market is central for us," Vladi explains. "A client can come and request a customized solution, and we are capable of building a completely new material composition for them, whether it's a special material or a complex geometry."
These capabilities have made Paxis a strategic partner for all major defense industries in the Israeli economy – both governmental and private. This is alongside collaborations with startup companies and direct work with the Defense Ministry and special units in the IDF. Furthermore, the company maintains significant export activities for defense and civilian clients abroad.

The National Importance of Domestic Production

Following the dynamics of the security and geopolitical situation, the need for Israeli-made manufacturing independence has become strategic and even critical for the State of Israel. Vladi emphasizes that the most significant challenge today is a conceptual shift at the decision-makers' level: "It's easy for defense industries to procure from abroad, but the recent period has proven how vital it is to manufacture independently in Israel. To maintain an advanced local industry, top-down decisions and long-term investments in local development and production are required." He adds that there is critical importance in equipping all Israeli defense bodies with Israeli-made ceramic armor and manufacturing capabilities to provide an immediate quantitative response, as has been required since October 7. The Defense Ministry defined the technology as critical and consequently invested in the company's infrastructure equipment.

Paxis's vision is clear and unequivocal. "Our goal is to become Israel's one-stop shop in the field of ceramic materials," Vladi emphasizes. "We want industries in Israel to recognize our capabilities, and before turning abroad, to know that there is a unique Israeli company that can provide a complete, high-quality, and advanced Israeli-made solution, possessing the unique production means required for manufacturing in the necessary quantity and quality."
