In a threat-saturated battlefield, where autonomous platforms populate the air, sea and land, the ability to transmit protected information in real time is no longer a tactical advantage, but a basic condition for survival and mission success. In this reality, the Israeli company Commtact, headquartered in Yavne, is establishing its position as a critical technological pillar in local and global defense and attack systems.
Recent evidence of the company's strength came with the announcement of the launch of the Maxi Phoenix system and the signing of a first contract worth millions of dollars with a leading defense client (Tier 1).
The new system, which is at the forefront of the Phoenix product family developed by the company, presents an advanced broadband data link solution designed for critical long-range operations and provides secure and stable communication for distances exceeding 200 kilometers. This is a significant engineering achievement, especially given that the system maintains high performance even in challenging environments and extreme scenarios of GPS signal absence, while maintaining an optimal Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) profile that allows for seamless integration into various platforms.
Control from a Distance of Tens of Kilometers
The new system is adapted for multi-domain operation. In its aerial configuration, it is designed to be integrated onto unmanned aerial vehicles to extend communication range. On the ground, it supports Remote Video Terminal (RVT) units, mobile or stationary, providing tactical forces with control over aerial platforms from tens of kilometers away. In the maritime environment, the system interfaces directly with the vessel's Inertial Navigation System (INS), thereby ensuring communication continuity for unmanned surface vessels (USV) even in complex sea conditions.
According to Guy Eshel, the company's CEO, the system's launch reflects a precise response to the growing operational demand for robust, long-range communication in multi-threat environments, and demonstrates market confidence in the company's technology.
At the heart of the company's technological innovation is its Software-Defined Radio (SDR) capability. Commtact's SDR systems enable high operational flexibility, re-adaptation of operating frequencies and exceptional resilience to interference. The company implements advanced digital modulation solutions such as GMSK, which ensure spectral efficiency and energy savings in power-limited tactical platforms, alongside OFDM modulation for dealing with multi-path interference in urban and maritime environments.
To ensure mission success and absolute information protection, the company's systems integrate strong AES256 encryption, cryptographic authentication mechanisms (CAT) and electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) capabilities. These include frequency hopping (FH) techniques, alongside capabilities to evade and avoid interference by identifying jammed frequencies and switching to clear channels. In addition to high – performance Line of Sight (LOS) communication for video and data transmission, Commtact provides robust Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) solutions through advanced relay capabilities. Concurrently, the company plans to enter additional domains for aircraft, a decision reinforced by recent combat lessons. Another area where Commtact has a significant presence is the guided munitions sector. The company's network communication solutions are specifically adapted to the stringent requirements of missiles, guided munitions and loitering munitions, providing command and control channels (up-link/down-link), telemetry and real-time video transmission, which directly contribute to mission accuracy and force safety.
Successfully Accomplishing the Mission
Beyond its international activities, Commtact has been an integral part of the Israeli defense industry for over two decades. During the "Iron Swords" war and "Am Kelavi" operation, the company's products saw practical and prominent use in the field, and its solutions are integrated into key systems of the Israel Air Force and Ground Forces. The war presented the company with significant challenges, says Eshel, who employs over 80 workers, about half of whom are in R&D. "We experienced a dramatic surge in demands from the Defense Ministry, the IDF and our key clients, including local industry giants. At the same time, we had a commitment to our overseas clients. We were required to deliver systems in record time and even develop new capabilities born from lessons learned in the field. Clients rely on us to meet deadlines, and we have certainly met and continue to meet the challenge with honor."
