ENERGY STORAGE IS TRANSFORMING ISRAEL'S ELECTRICITY MARKET

The global energy-storage giant HiTHIUM is supplying Israel with large-scale storage facilities, positioning the country at the forefront of next-generation smart-energy infrastructure. "Israel is undergoing an energy revolution," says Robby Davidson, CEO of Zing Energy, HiTHIUM's representative in Israel. "Over the next three years construction is expected to begin on some 15 high-voltage storage stations."

The renewable energy market in Israel is evolving into a fully international ecosystem, according to Robby Davidson, CEO of Zing Energy. "Israeli entrepreneurs today are leading projects on the scale of gigawatt-hours, competing with global giants," he says. "This shift from a local arena to the global stage of many Israeli-based international companies — Enlight, Doral, Nofar, Shikun & Binui Energy, Rapac Renewable Energy and more — reflects a profound structural transformation. No renewable energy project in Israel or anywhere else is now planned without an energy-storage component."

I met Davidson at the lowest energy-storage site in the world, some 430 meters below sea level in the Dead Sea region. It has recently been connected to the national electricity grid and has already contributed to stabilizing it.

"We work closely with our customers," says Davidson. "Technology is only one part of the story. What truly matters is service, monitoring, maintenance and uninterrupted operation. Storage systems are complex. They demand continuous attention, safety checks, full operational readiness and a rapid response to any issue."

Founded in 2017 and serving hundreds of customers across Israel, Zing Energy specializes in the trading, engineering, installation and maintenance of renewable energy systems, from storage solutions to solar inverters, panels and mounting structures. With the global energy-storage leader HiTHIUM, which has appointed Zing as its exclusive strategic partner in Israel, the company is advancing next-generation technologies.

The partnership's major breakthrough is expected in early 2026, with the introduction of HiTHIUM's high-energy-density storage systems. These will offer approximately 20 percent greater energy density than current market solutions.

"A 6.25 MWh HiTHIUM system is a cutting-edge, large-scale energy-storage system, primarily designed for long-duration energy storage (LDES) connected to high- and extra-high-voltage grids," explains Davidson. "These systems will save our customers significant capital because they require less space and involve less installation, which ultimately cuts overall costs."

A site that previously required 12 energy-storage containers, for example, will need only 10. At larger clusters of some 180 storage containers, this number drops dramatically to about 150. These reductions translate into substantial savings, which developers and financiers are already recognizing.

The innovative 6.25 MWh storage containers are already in production and are expected in Israel by early 2026. The first site to use these containers is designed for load shifting on the electricity grid — charging batteries when electricity costs are low and discharging energy to the grid during peak rates.

"By 2026, we'll begin supplying approximately 1 GWh of next-generation storage systems for this project," notes Davidson. "This includes some 150 energy-storage containers along with several dozen additional containers of auxiliary equipment. This is a scale unprecedented in Israel's storage sector."

HiTHIUM, Zing Energy's partner in Israel, is the world's second-largest manufacturer of energy-storage batteries. Their batteries have unique characteristics distinguishing them from those used in electric vehicles. The sodium-ion batteries which the company launched in 2024, for example, deliver exceptional performance for energy storage but are unsuitable for electric vehicle use.

HiTHIUM operates across all segments in Israel, from large- and medium-scale electricity infrastructures to commercial and industrial applications. Over the years, the company has come to the forefront of the global field, ranked second worldwide for three consecutive quarters in the production and supply of batteries for renewable energy.

HiTHIUM invests heavily in R&D, holds thousands of patents and has recently introduced innovative products such as the 6.25 MWh system and sodium-ion cells for future projects. It employs 1,500 R&D engineers in a total workforce of around 8,500, and has factories in the United States and China. In response to strong demand in the US, the company recently opened a battery manufacturing plant in Texas, and is in the advanced stages of a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Israel's energy market has seen rapid — even meteoric — growth in

recent years. A striking example is its first high-voltage storage tender, issued by the Israel Electricity Authority. The winners will develop storage facilities with a combined capacity of 1,500 MW. For 29 projects totaling roughly 4,000 MWh, proposals have been submitted by 11 bidders. Estimated investment in these facilities is around 3 billion shekels.

The primary goal of these new storage facilities is to capture renewable energy generated in southern Israel in daytime and deliver it to consumption centers in central Israel in the evening. Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, the facilities will support the system operator, enabling integration of additional renewable energy projects into the grid. They will thus optimize a critical grid resource and help advance the government's renewable energy targets.

"These tenders reflect the ongoing energy revolution in Israel," says Davidson. "Over the next three years, at least 15 high-voltage storage stations are expected to be built, along with dozens of other high-voltage storage facilities.
