THE FORCE MULTIPLIER THAT LED THE IDF TO UNMATCHED GROUND SUPERIORITY
ORION, developed by Asio Technologies in collaboration with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) technology division and in full operational deployment by the IDF, has redefined the modern battlefield by enabling field commanders to independently control the modern combat zones. "The deployment of thousands of these systems marks a transformative shift in how ground forces operate, allowing integrated teams from multiple ground corps and the Airforce to act with unprecedented effectiveness and synchronization," says Tomer Malchi, Company founder and CEO.

Over the past years, the IDF has demonstrated extraordinary ground dominance on both its northern and southern fronts. While Israeli air superiority is well established, the speed, precision, and effectiveness of its ground maneuvering forces represent a real revolution in modern warfare.
This shift is mainly due to the IDF's creation of integrated combat teams — composed of regular and reserve forces — that operate seamlessly across land, underground, and air domains. The enabler of this unprecedented coordination is a technological breakthrough spearheaded by Asio Technologies, a rapidly growing defense company based in Kfar Saba, Israel.
Real-time, Autonomous Command at the Tactical Edge
Asio's tactical systems combine advanced software and electro-optics to deliver an interactive, real-time battlefield picture. These tools allow commanders to plan and execute missions with unmatched clarity and coordination. By fusing data from sensors, drones, and intelligence feeds, Asio creates a unified "digital battlespace," giving field commanders real-time control that resembles futuristic simulation environments.
One name is familiar to every IDF officer and soldier: Orion — Asio's flagship handheld system, often called the "pocketknife" of the battlefield. The Orion is designed to meet the specific needs of the tactical commander.
Adopted by infantry battalions and combat brigades across regular and reserve units, Orion places a 3D operational picture in the palm of a commander's hand. It integrates layered maps, satellite images, terrain modes, mission data, navigation tools, blue force positional tracking, and real-time intelligence from the IDF's Intelligence Directorate.
Orion offers capabilities such as:
- Terrain (maps and satellite layers) and threats analysis
- Operations and mission data layers overlay
- Augmented Reality (AR) over camera view
- Enemy line-of-sight and observation-point assessments
- Identification of dominant and blind spots/areas
- Accurate distance and target measurement
- Optimal route planning and interactive navigation
- Post-mission debriefing and action review
Built on open architecture, Orion securely connects with both Asio's and third-party systems, enabling interoperability across units.
Commanding with a Combat "Street View"
As reported on the IDF's official website, a dynamic virtual environment for Orion was created by Unit 9900 — the military's visual intelligence and mapping unit. This environment allows commanders to conduct, analysis, and mission execution autonomously, without relying on centralized C4I systems.
Commanders can conduct virtual walk-throughs of combat zones using a friendly interface like Google Street View with missions and forces on top. The system reflects real-time changes in the field, allowing for updated navigation, friend-or-foe identification, and adaptive mission planning.
Built for Challenging Conditions
"Thousands of Orion devices are deployed across most IDF combat units," Says Company founder and CEO Tomer Malchi. "They address one of the key challenges of combat: the lack of continuous, reliable communication in hostile environments. Orion is designed to serve soldiers in harsh operational conditions — even in areas with no network connectivity. Its ability to operate both online and offline makes it a vital mobile command post for front-line leaders. It is truly a force multiplier and represents a fundamental shift in modern ground combat."
A Full-Spectrum Tactical Ecosystem
"Asio was created to translate field needs into intuitive, effective technological solutions," says company founder Tomer Malchi. "We developed a unified and secure operational platform that integrates all tactical tools into one battlefield-ready ecosystem."
Asio quickly became a global leader in tactical warfare technologies. "At the heart of our systems is a multi-layered integration of sensors, analytics, and advanced processing capabilities that respond to the battlefield's dynamic nature," adds Malchi.
Through advanced interfaces and augmented reality, Asio's systems filter and focus battlefield data to enhance decision-making in real time. These visual-operational tools have become key contributors to the IDF's superiority in all active combat theaters.
While Orion gets much of the attention, it is only part of Asio's offering. Another standout solution is Lynx (called Maayan in IDF terminology) — a wearable tactical augmentation system that merges day/night optics and machine vision. Lynx overlays map-based intelligence directly onto the operator's view, enhancing awareness and target identification.
Together, Orion and Lynx form an integrated tactical suite that reduces the cognitive burden on operators, shortens the sensor-to-shooter cycle, and provides unparalleled situational awareness.
The Next Generation of Battlefield Dominance
"The most meaningful feedback comes directly from the battlefield," says Giora Shaked, Chief Business Officer at Asio Technologies. "Time and again, we hear from officers and soldiers who credit our systems with enabling them to complete their missions successfully and return home safely. Our mission is to give warfighters the tactical edge they need - while maximizing their safety." Shaked adds: "Asio's continued growth, both in Israel and internationally, demonstrates the strength of Israel's defense-tech industry. We translate operational realities into practical, combat-proven technologies. This is not only about meeting today's challenges - it's about shaping the battlefield of the future." Said Shaked.
