Enertec: Outsourced Defense & Medical Projects
For over 27 years, Enertec has been executing masses of complex development initiatives for some of the largest security and defense companies in Israel: “Our clients can rest assured that we’ll provide them with the precise project they seek – on time, in high-quality, and within their planned budget, while maintaining complete confidentiality.”
The security and defense technology sector has been at the foundation of Israeli industry, since its inception. From aerial defense systems and drones to advanced cyber developments, Israeli companies and their innovations remain at the forefront of the global defense industry. The more that the local industry grows and develops in new directions, the more that local security and defense technology companies find themselves needing to enter into partnerships that help them outsource their development processes, and reallocate human and other resources, towards other activities.
This is where Enertec enters the picture. The company serves as a leading player in the outsourced defense arena. Zvika Avni, the company’s founder and chairman, recounts that, in 1995, the Enertec team identified Israeli companies’ need to outsource entire initiatives, within the security and defense field. “After serving in the Navy and working for Elbit Systems, I understood that the country’s largest companies could benefit from outsourcing their massive projects – and established the company on this premise,” he says. “Enertec was founded to serve as a sub-contractor that’s capable of completing the highest level of development tasks, and enable the client to hand off tasks to outsourced professionals, without ever compromising on the final products’ quality.”
According to Avni, the company has grown and developed with Israel’s defense industry. “When we started out, there was no such thing as outsourcing in this field, in Israel. A very long process had to be implemented, in order to ensure clients felt comfortable outsourcing their projects, knowing that they’d get the final products back on time, in top quality, and within their desired budgets. Over the years, we’ve proven our professional abilities, and have become a significant company within Israel’s security and defense industry.”
Presently, Enertec employs roughly 80 workers, most of whom are engineers. The company is located in Karmiel and executes system engineering, specification writing, integration, and software, hardware, and mechanics development projects for industry-leading companies. “We supply our clients with complete systems, such as parts for weapons systems, inspection systems, and simulators,” Avni says. “In recent years, we expanded to the medical field as well, developing calibration and inspection systems for some of the world’s leading medical technology companies.” Enertec was recently acquired by an American company, and is currently expanding and developing at an accelerated rate. This includes moving the company’s offices to a new site, and onboarding employees from military and medical backgrounds.
Extensive investments in research and development
The company places an emphasis on various development aspects, as well as on technological and research excellence. “From the start, we decided that we would only develop projects, not execute other companies’ projects in development. Our goal is to independently perform the entire development and system engineering process, to be able to provide our clients with same or even higher level products, than what they already have, in-house.”
Avni proudly proclaims that “Roughly 15 percent of our returns have been invested in research and development, over the years. Today, when we develop an inspection system for a defense or medical industry client, we often supply them with more advanced technologies, than what they originally had at their disposal.”
One of the company’s flagship activities is developing inspection systems and simulators for military applications. In essence, Avni explains that Enertec is currently the country’s most veteran private company in this field. “I am proud to say that we execute the largest and most significant inspection and simulation system projects in the State of Israel. Beyond these, we also develop parts for weapons systems, such as launch systems, control systems, and other operational systems.”
Enertec’s process includes studying the specifications of any development project, together with the client. “We execute full or modular projects. Clients can decide to outsource their launch system or missile battery’s development to us, knowing that they will receive it, together with the entire system they are developing. We develop the electronic system, and as soon as the client is ready for the entire system to be integrated, we supply our part and help integrate it within the overall product.”
Avni recounts that, for the past 25 years, the company has been developing a complex electronic system for a large defense project. “We accompany the client throughout the complex development stages, during which we receive full autonomy over the significant system responsible for performing the launch process. Enertec executes all of the project’s stages: system engineering, development, assembly, integration, testing, proof of fitness, installation, and even maintenance and upgrades, down the line. This is a significant system for the State of Israel, and we are proud to play a significant role in its development.”
Avni adds that another company advantage is the fact that Enertec solely focuses on outsourcing, and does not develop products of its own. “Everything we do for any client is held in strict confidentiality. Namely, the client can enjoy complete peace of mind that we act in their best interests, without fearing that we might compete against them, in future tenders.”
A family feel and opportunities for growth
Enertec’s team of engineers is experienced in completing especially complex and challenging projects, as well as in developing complex systems. “Our professional team has experience in developing systems that work in harsh environmental conditions and in any weather conditions. We strongly believe in our human capital and love giving new engineers opportunities to grow, together with the company.
“Engineers and production workers who join us undergo comprehensive and set professional training, within the walls of our factory,” Avni explains. “Each engineer is assigned a mentor, who guides them on a professional level, while upholding a pleasant, family atmosphere. Within two or three years, formerly new engineers become more independent, when managing and developing projects. After five years, they can start managing and developing large and complex projects, entirely on their own. This opportunity to delve into development is not a given, and we are convinced that it is one of our strengths, as a company.”
