Training the Next Generation of Cyberwarriors

Since its establishment about two years ago, Israel Cyber Campus has trained over 2,000 people, from Israel and abroad, offering the highest level of education provided by former members of elite IDF units. Due to high demand, the campus is opening additional courses for teenagers in the United States and Australia

In recent years, the field of cyber security has become one of the most sought-after and popular fields in the job market. The combination of cyber threats and attacks on countries and commercial companies, together with a persistent shortage of personnel, has created unprecedented demand for SOC analysts. Even large companies that invest enormous sums in establishing advanced defense systems suffer from a severe shortage of personnel. According to a study by the international association of cybersecurity professionals (ISC), [shouldn't this be ISC2?] there is a global shortage of 3.4 million workers in the cyber industry, with demand for workers growing faster than the supply. These circumstances led to the establishment of Israel Cyber Campus about two years ago. Israel Cyber Campus is a professional school of the highest caliber, training cyberwarriors quickly and effectively. In the two years since its inception, the school has trained 2,000 graduates from Israel, Europe, the US, and Australia.

Among its teachers, Israel Cyber Campus counts some of the leading figures of the IDF's cyber and intelligence community. The Campus is headed by Yigal Unna, former head of the National Cyber Directorate, who serves as Campus President. The Campus offers both in-person and online classes. The curriculum is designed for adults seeking to enter the workforce as well as for teenagers who wish to gain knowledge and experience to provide a strong starting point for joining the elite IDF intelligence and cyber units.

The Campus places a strong emphasis on exposing the younger generation to the field of cyber security. Founder Ronit Hassin Hochman explains: "Exposure at a young age provides an enormous springboard to quality military service and later to joining the ranks of professionals in industry. A career in cyber is today one of the most lucrative ones in the market, especially for skilled workers with knowledge in cyber defense. The skill is so rare and valuable that companies are willing to pay substantial sums to those with the right experience." Therefore, the Campus places a major emphasis on practical experience in the field and has developed an AI-based simulator that replicates real cyber-attacks, enabling students to practice identifying and contending with various types of attacks. Studies begin with the basics—students learn about online safety, privacy protection, and programming, gradually building their knowledge and skills until they can identify and block cyberattacks and even carry out attacks themselves.

"Israel is a cyber powerhouse, which makes the local industry a hub of knowledge and experience capable of training the next generation of workers in the field," says Yigal Unna. "People feel intimidated by the complexity of the field, but with the right guidance, skill acquisition, and the motivation to learn and work hard, anyone can succeed and become part of the cyberwarrior community."
