Labyrinth of Peace (Coming April 12)
This award-winning Swiss drama is one of the most highly anticipated Jewish shows of the year. Inspired by real events, Labyrinth of Peace dramatizes the tensions, corruption, and intrigue that unfolded in Switzerland after World War II. The show follows a family of Swiss industrial magnates and uncovers Switzerland’s complicity with Nazi crimes, assistance to escaping war criminals, and its treatment of Jewish survivors. The show premiered in 2020, marking the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. This high-budget drama focuses on the aftermath of World War II, bringing a new perspective on the crimes and consequences of the war.
The New Black “Shababnikim”
The New Black is a comedy about four Haredi yeshiva students who don’t exactly fit in. The Israeli show follows them through their journey in Jerusalem where they sometimes find themselves at the mall instead of studying Torah, putting them at odds with their rabbi, their parents, and the local matchmaker. This was ChaiFlicks’ first TV show and one of the streaming service’s most popular. Rightly so, the show achieved equal fame when it aired in Israel and won multiple awards including Best Comedy, Best Comedy Script, and Best Comedy Actor. Both seasons are available now on ChaiFlicks.
Checkout
Checkout is an Israeli mockumentary that shows some of the funniest parts of Israeli culture. The show takes place in a fictional supermarket and follows the interactions of employees and customers who cut corners, bargain, and try to trick the overzealous manager. Anyone who has even been grocery shopping in Israel knows it’s never just about buying food and Checkout does a great job highlighting the clashes, pranks, mishaps, and annoyances that happen while the customers wait in line. This show was also well received and won Best Sitcom Series at the Israeli Academy Awards. All three seasons are available on ChaiFlicks.
Wartime Girls
Wartime Girls follows three women—two Catholics and a Jew—trying to survive in Poland, one of the bloodiest countries during World War II. The show starts in 1939 when one of the women, a petty thief, is released from prison on account of the bombings. She tries to steal the Jewish woman’s wallet, and then they end up joining the resistance movement to fight against the Nazi occupation. This award-winning Polish show depicts how people from different religions and economic backgrounds were all affected during the war. All three seasons are filled with drama, suspense, and even some humor.
Unchained “Metir Agunot”
Unchained is unlike any of the plethora of recent shows that depict Jewish Orthodox in daily life. In this show, Rabbi Yosef Morad works as a detective to investigate marriages that women are trying to escape. Morad convinces husbands to grant their wives a divorce and unchain them from their marriages. In the meantime, the rabbi uncovers secrets surrounding his own marriage that isn’t as perfect as it seemed. The protagonist is based on a real-life rabbi who helped women trapped in complex divorce proceedings. This show features some of Israel’s top actors including Aviv Alush, famous for his lead role in Beauty and the Baker.
These five shows along with thousands of others are available now on ChaiFlicks.com in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Streaming will be available in the UK on May 1.
