Meghan McCain and Donald Trump Jr. got into a heated exchange on Thursday’s episode of “The View,” when McCain, the daughter of the late Republican Senator John McCain, asked the president’s eldest son how it feels to know “you and your family have hurt a lot of people.”
“Mr. Trump, a lot of Americans in politics miss character,” McCain argued. “And a lot of people miss the soul of this country. You and your family have hurt a lot of people and put a lot of people through a lot of pain, including the Khan family who is a Gold Star family that I think should be respected for the loss of their son. Does all of this make you feel good?”
Both McCain and the Khan family, who were critics of Trump, received personal attacks on their character from the president. Trump famously criticized McCain’s status as an American war hero for his time spent in a Vietnam prison camp. "He's not a war hero," Trump said. "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."
Trump Jr responded to McCain, "I don't think any of that makes me feel good, but I do think that we got into this because we wanted to do what's right for America."
Trump Jr went on to list his father’s accomplishments on the economy before the conversation devolved into a debate between Trump Jr and co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar after the president’s son accused Goldberg of defending Roman Polanksi and Behar of wearing blackface.
Co-host Sunny Hostin brought the conversation back to Donald Trump’s attacks on John McCain. “I understand that and I’m sorry about that,” Trump Jr. said. “They did have differences, I agree with that.”
“It’s just, for me, it would not have been worth it,” McCain countered. “This would not have been worth it. And I think people can go to the moment where my dad had stopped someone from saying Obama was a Muslim. And the pain, inflicting pain on so many people, wouldn’t have been worth it to me and my family to the White House.”

“So I just want to know, is it worth it?” she concluded.
