Pope Francis and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump were caught joking about the president's culinary habits during a meeting at the Vatican on Wednesday.

"What do you give him to eat?" Francis asked Mrs. Trump as he shook her hand after his private meeting with the U.S. president.

"Pizza," replied the first lady, drawing laughter from the pope.

It's unclear if the Pope said pizza – the famous Americanized Italian dish – or potizza – a Slovenian nut roll dessert. Regardless, Melania answered with the former.

Trump and the pope, one of the president's most high profile critics, met for the first time on Wednesday at the Vatican, the third stop on Trump's first foreign trip as U.S. president.

The president looked uncomfortable as he entered a small elevator taking him to the pontiff's private study. Following the meeting, Trump, who seemed far more relaxed, told his host, "I won't forget what you said."
