The childhood home of the late Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor, renowned author and winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace, was vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti.

The house, which is located in the Romanian town of Sighetu Marmatiei, serves as a museum. On Friday, anonymous vandals scrawled on the house the words: "Pedophile. Jewish Nazi who is in hell with Hitler."

Local police have opened an investigation into the incident and noted that the vandalism was documented by security cameras.

Wiesel died two years ago at the age of 87 in his New York home. He was born at the Sighetu Marmatiei house in 1928, and was deported from his childhood home along with his family to the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in 1944.

Wiesel participated in the death march from Auschwitz to the death camp Buchenwald towards the end of World War II, and was later freed by the Allies.

In 2002, a small museum dedicated to the memory of Wiesel and the local Jewish culture was inaugurated at the Sighetu Marmatiei house.

In a separate incident that took place last week in Poland, an object was hurled at Israeli students who were visiting Janusz Korczak's orphanage in Warsaw. None of the students were injured in the incident.
