In the book he published two years later, Obama’s close adviser Ben Rhodes reveals something of the content of that conversation. Merkel related that she had considered resigning as chancellor already then, in 2016, when her third term ended, but after Donald Trump was elected, she was pressured not to leave the world bereft of her leadership.
