Bernie Sanders joined the widespread condemnation of Donald Trump's attack on the bereaved parents of an American Muslim soldier, saying that "the ugly stain of racism" must be rid of.

Referring to his own family history, the Vermont senator and former Democratic presidential candidate tweeted that "I’m Jewish. My father’s family died in concentration camps. I will do everything I can to rid this country of the ugly stain of racism."

"Lots of hate is being generated against Muslims in America. If we stand for anything we have to stand together and end all forms of racism."

On Saturday, Trump rejected criticism from Khizr Khan, who said the Republican presidential nominee had "sacrificed nothing and no one," and questioned whether his wife was allowed to speak during the couple's appearance at the Democratic convention.

"If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me," Trump said.

Trump's comments generated backlash, with former President Bill Clinton and Democratic Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine expressing shock at his remarks.

Khan also slammed Trump's remarks, saying that "he has no decency. He is void of decency. He has a dark heart."
