A 20-year-old woman died on Tuesday of multiple organ failure just weeks after giving birth at the Hillel Yaffeh Medical Center in Hadera. The child is well, but remains in the ward for premature babies.
The hospital says the patient refused to be hospitalized when symptoms of kidney failure first appeared, and checked in only a day later, when her state had already deteriorated.
The patient, a resident of Hadera, arrived at the hospital three weeks ago. She complained of headache, stomachache and nausea.
The Hillel Yaffeh team found the woman's kidneys were beginning to fail because of an infection and recommended that she be hospitalized immediately, but she refused. She returned the next day with a worsened infection, and this time agreed to be hospitalized.
A few hours later, despite antibiotic treatment, she developed sepsis and was moved to intensive care, where she was anesthetized and put on artificial respiration. A week later, the woman, still unconscious, gave birth to a girl in the 31st week of pregnancy. She then developed a brain edema and died less than two weeks later.
The hospital said the patient received full and professional treatment by a team of specialists. "We share the family's grief," its statement said.
