Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama's former chief of staff, declared in a press conference Tuesday the city will continue to welcome and defend "Dreamers" after Donald Trump rescinded DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
“To all the Dreamers that are here in this room, and in the city of Chicago, you are welcomed in the city of Chicago. This is your home and you have nothing to worry about,” Emanuel said.
“Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city, as it relates to what President Trump said, will be a Trump-free zone. You have nothing to worry about,” Emanuel continued.
Emanuel in December 2016, had repurposed $1 million earmarked for a property tax rebate and used it to create a “Legal Protection Fund” for immigrants living in “anxiety and uncertainty” and threatened with deportation after the election of Donald Trump
