Somali-American model and activist Halima Aden will grace the latest issue of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit wearing a burkini, in a first for the magazine.

The feature was shot in Kenya, where Aden was born in Kakuma refugee camp.

"I'm hoping this specific feature will open doors up for my Somali community, Muslim community, refugee community and any other community that can relate to being different," Aden said in a statement.

Aden made headlines in 2016 as the first hijab- and burkini-sporting contestant in the history of the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. The bold move catapulted her career to new heights involving many "firsts," including being the first hijabi signed by a major modelling agency.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit hits newsstands on May 8, 2019.
