Fox News Rejects Ad Warning Against Nazism as 'Not Appropriate'

The Hollywood Reporter first learned of the rejected ad promoting anti-fascist documentary that is nominated for an Oscar. Fox News: 'The ad in question is full of disgraceful Nazi imagery'

Fox News rejected a national ad buy for a 30-second spot for the Oscar nominated short documentary “Night at the Garden,” which also warns against a fascist resurgence. 

The Hollywood Reporter first learned of the rejected ad buy, which was slated to run during Fox New’s “Hannity” program. The Hollywood Reporter reportedly viewed an email correspondence in which “Fox News national ad sales representative told the distributor's media-buying agency on Wednesday that CEO Suzanne Scott (‘our CEO’) said the ad was ‘not appropriate for our air.’”

Sean Hannity, the host of "Hannity," is a prominent supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump - having even appeared at a rally with him during the 2018 mid-term elections.

”The ad in question is full of disgraceful Nazi imagery regardless of the film’s message and did not meet our guidelines,” said Marianne Gambelli, president of ad sales for Fox News Channel, in a statement.

A Night at The Garden - Field of Vision

“Night at the Garden” shows actual footage from a Nazi rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1939 and the ad in question warned that in Trump’s America in 2019, "It Can Happen Here."

The ad was originally set to run on Monday night during “Hannity” in the Los Angeles media market, but was bumped for Trump’s El Paso rally - after which the film's distributor, Field of Vision, tried to purchase a national spot on “Hannity.”

"The film shines a light on a time when thousands of Americans fell under the spell of a demagogue who attacked the press and scapegoated minorities using the symbols of American patriotism," “Night at the Garden” director Marshall Curry told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement.

Variety noted however that "no national TV network has run the “Garden” as of Wednesday night, according to data from iSpot TV, a service that monitors ad spending and placement."
