Bill Maher’s show “Real Time” is still on a break between its 16th and 17th HBO seasons, but the political satirist swung by MSNBC Tuesday to offer his thoughts on the lastest Trump-Russia bombshells.

“In the time you’ve been away and watching this massacre of democracy, this president has been asked whether he’s a Russian agent,” Chris Matthews began his interview with Maher on "Hardball". “It’s about time. I’ve been using the word ‘treason’ the whole time he’s been in,” Maher replied.

“I hear those words used a lot more, I mean that’s what it is,” he said.

“What is it when you plainly are with the people who are not us? Didn’t we see that in Helsinki? Plainly, he was saying, ‘Given the choice, I go with President Putin. President Putin says he didn’t do it, I don’t know why he would.’ Could you imagine if Bush after 9/11 had stood on the rubble with a bullhorn and said ‘Well, Bin Laden says that he didn’t do it, I don’t know why he would have.’”

Maher explained that he wasn’t always for impeaching Trump,  but that recent events have changed his mind.

“So I don’t know how we get out of this except by getting him out of office. I wasn’t necessarily for impeachment until recently, but I think you have to go ahead and do it” Maher argued.

Mathews also asked Maher to weigh in on the latest Steve King controversy - referring to King losing his committee assignments in the wake of his most recent remarks supporting white nationalism.

“Look where the bar is, that we’re cheering the Republicans because they say we don’t believe in white supremacy. This is how far down we’ve gone,” Maher concluded.
