Atlantic Asks How a Second U.S. Civil War Can Be Avoided

Editor Jeffrey Goldberg says it's coincidental that the issue is publishing one day before the House is to begin public impeachment hearings on President Trump

The Atlantic magazine was founded in 1857 as the United States was heading toward Civil War. So, it's noteworthy when the journal publishes a new issue themed "How to stop a Civil War."

That issue hits newsstands and posts online Tuesday.

Editor Jeffrey Goldberg says it's coincidental that the issue is publishing one day before the House is to begin public impeachment hearings on President Trump.

The Atlantic issue discusses how changes in politics, the media, technology and demographics have many Americans at each other's throats.

Atlantic's dramatic December issue coincides with a redesign of both the print magazine and its website.
