It all started with a joke. A Harvard zoology professor tasked his students with writing research proposals on elephants. The German student wrote “An Introduction to the Bibliography of Empirical Elephant Studies.” The French student submitted a paper on “The Love Life of the African Elephant.” The British student’s proposal was “Elephant Hunting throughout the British Empire.” The American student suggested “How to Raise Bigger and Better Elephants.”
