FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who has drawn criticism from President Donald Trump, has stepped down from his current role, several weeks earlier than his expected retirement date, NBC News reported on Monday, citing several sources familiar with matter.

McCabe had been expected to leave the federal law enforcement agency as its No. 2 official in March but will be on leave until his retirement date, NBC reported.

Representatives for the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

McCabe had replaced the former FBI Director James Comey who was fired by Trump in May last year. Trump said he fired Comey over his handling of an election-year email scandal last year involving then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Democrats immediately accused Trump of acting out of political motives.
