The Federalist newspaper, citing multiple sources familiar with the situation, said the national security and counterterrorism expert in his letter of resignation had expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the Trump administration.
"As a result, the best and most effective way I can support you, Mr. President, is from outside the People's House," Gorka was quoted as saying in the letter by the Federalist.
Gorka's departure came just over a week after U.S. President Donald Trump fired chief strategist Steve Bannon. Gorka and Bannon are said to be close associates.
Gorka worked with anti-Semitic groups in the past, and had close ties to Hungarian far-right political groups. In May, members of Congress submitted a letter urging Trump to fire Gorka over these allegations. This week, Senators asked the Trump administration to investigate Gorka's application for U.S. citizenship, claiming he had lied about his membership to anti-Semitic and far-right Hungarian organizations.
