The Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, said Tuesday that Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey is evidence of a “constitutional crisis.”

“We are witnessing a constitutional crisis unfold before our very eyes,” Ellison said in a statement.

Ellison pointed to Comey’s statement under oath on March 20, which confirmed that the FBI was “investigating the Trump campaign for its involvement with Russian officials to influence our election,” as Trump’s reason for firing the FBI Director.

“The next FBI Director appointed by President Trump will not have the independence or confidence of the American people to continue this investigation,” the statement continues.

“In order to preserve the integrity of the investigation and the government, we need a special prosecutor to probe the possible collusion between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian government officials,” concluded Ellison.

According to a report from The Hill, DNC Chairman Tom Perez also criticized the move, saying that firing Comey is a “brazen and disgraceful abuse of power.”

“The fact that the leadership of the Justice Department was complicit in manufacturing this joke of a rationale for Comey’s dismissal at the request of the Trump is further evidence that nobody in this administration can be trusted to lead an investigation into a serious national security issue,” Perez said.
