At a CNN town hall in Baltimore last week, President Joe Biden was asked whether the United States would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack. “Yes, we have a commitment to do that,” he responded.
It was not the first time he had made such a statement. Speaking with ABC News in August, he said: “We made a sacred commitment to [NATO treaty] Article 5 that if in fact anyone were to invade or take action against our NATO allies, we would respond. Same with Japan, same with South Korea, same with – Taiwan. It’s not even comparable to talk about that,” he said in an interview following the U.S. Army’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
