Mike Pence was the clear-cut winner of Wednesday night’s Vice-Presidential Debate in Salt Lake City but may pay dearly for his victory. Pence didn’t beat Democratic rival Kamala Harris, who held her own and then some, but commentators from left and right agreed that his performance was immeasurably better and certainly less damaging than Donald Trump’s first matchup against Joe Biden last week, which, given the president’s refusal to take part in the “virtual” debate proposed by the overseeing commission, could be the last as well.
