WASHINGTON - Republican Senator Josh Hawley on Tuesday blocked an attempt to approve Tom Nides, U.S. President Joe Biden's nominee for U.S. ambassador to Israel, after an attempt to confirm him by unanimous consent.

The Missouri senator said he objected on behalf of his Republican colleagues to Nides, along with seven other nominees, pushed by Sen. Robert Menendez. Hawley did not specify what the objections were to Nides prior to his objection, but Republican lawmakers have recently united in their opposition to the reopening of the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem, turning what was once assumed to be a low-hanging fruit for the Biden administration into a hot-button wedge issue and will likely cite Nides' stated support of this policy as a reason for opposition.
