On a cold but sunny afternoon, I received a phone call from a woman I hardly talk to anymore. We used to be friends, but she left the country. 

First, she cracked a slightly uncomfortable joke about our past, then she said: "I'd like to talk to you about my mother. You know my mother’s life has always been surreal, but I have been told it’s spiralling beyond surrealism."
