Transport Workers Launch Strike

Transportation Ministry workers, including employees of the licensing bureau, will begin an open-ended strike today.

As a result, driving tests will be suspended and driver's licenses will not be renewed. In addition, since the strike encompasses the Meteorological Service, weather reports may be halted.

The ministry's workers committee said that the strike had been called because 10 days ago, the ministry had issued tenders to outsource certain ministry functions, such as the collection of driving test fees. Workers are also upset because a committee appointed by the ministry has recommended the dismissal of 47 of the Meteorological Service's 90 workers.

Additional gripes concern the ministry's plans to privatize its computer department and turn the Civil Aviation Administration and the Shipping Administration from ministry departments into independent statutory agencies.
