Soccer / Mundial TLV / Americas Have Strong Outings as USA, Argentina and Chile Advance to Quarters

Team USA routed France 7-1 last Thursday to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Mundial Tel Aviv five-a-side tournament for overseas nationals and immigrants.

USA has been the most impressive team seen so far, along with Nigeria and Chile. Captain Daniel Khordian can be proud of his teammates, and starting next match he can count also on Diana Redman, who will be back from her Euro tour with Israel's national women's soccer team.Germany also made through Group A with the USA, with a solid 6-4 defeat of Brazil.

Argentina qualified as well after a great South American derby against Uruguay, which it pulled out 4-3 to stay perfect in Group C. Israel is on top of Group C on goal difference after swatting The Netherlands 7-1.

Chile continued its dominant run with a 4-0 smashing of Mexico, leaving it in sole possession of first place in Group D.

Nigeria also clinched its quarterfinal spot after a 7-2 romp over England in Group B. Awala Magalan had a brace for the victors. The Nigerians were way too good for England, but the English team can qualify with a win over Switzerland on Thursday. In Group B's Central European derby, Belgium kept its qualifying hopes alive with a 5-2 win over Switzerland.

Belgium is vying with England for one of the three places left for the quarterfinals. Switzerland, Mexico, Sweden, Italy and Chile are also still in the hunt for the last three slots.

The third and final group stage round is on Thursday.
