Rishon Family's Killer Sentenced to Six Consecutive Life Sentences

'The defendant has lost any vestige of humanity,' the three judges wrote in their ruling. "In cold blood ... and great viciousness, he murdered six people."

Damian Karlik was sentenced to six life sentences on Tuesday for murdering the Oshrenko family in their Rishon Lezion apartment two years ago. The Central District Court in Petah Tikva also ordered Karlik, 40, to pay the remaining family members NIS 380,000 in compensation. He was also convicted of conspiracy, robbery and arson in attempting to set the crime scene on fire.

"The defendant has lost any vestige of humanity," wrote the three judges in their ruling. "In cold blood ... and great viciousness, he murdered six people from three generations of one family," wrote the judges.

Karlik's wife, Natalya, was convicted of manslaughter in the case a year ago. In a plea bargain, she was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The judges said Karlik acted in revenge, out of hatred and "was not deterred by the sight of the grandmother crying for help, the sight of a 5-month-old baby and 3-year-old sleeping peacefully. He stabbed his victims many times and after all that, the defendant acted according to his plan to set fire to the house and contents to hide his identity."

The court ruled Karlik was motivated by resentment against Edward Oshrenko and his son, Dmitry, who in 2008 fired him from his job as headwaiter at the family's high-end restaurant, Premier, after accusing him of stealing bottles of liquor. Karlik's wife, who was close to the Oshrenkos, copied their house key and her husband used it to enter the family's home.

Karlik denied his guilt throughout the trial, but admitted to being in the apartment. The judges said he acted in cold blood and planned to flee the country.

At 2 A.M. on October 17, 2009, Karlik cycled to the apartment, carrying a long knife, wrist restraints and a container of gasoline. After using his key to enter the home, he found Lyudmilla Oshrenko, Edward's wife, sleeping in the living room. He stabbed her to death and covered her with a sheet. At 5 A.M., when Edward returned home, Karlik stabbed him at least 18 times, killing him.

Karlik stabbed the daughter, Tatiana, more than 30 times. He then stabbed both Netanel, 3, and the baby Revital to death.
