Reform Popular in non-Jewish Areas

Around 40 percent of the schools that have joined the elementary school reform are in non-Jewish communities. The non-Jewish schools make up some 25 percent of the overall number of schools in the country. Out of the 253 schools that said they would join the reform, 151 are in Jewish communities and 102 in Arab, Druze and Circassian areas. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has praised the wage pact between the state and the main union for elementary school teachers. High school teachers, however, are currently striking.
