Olmert Rejects Call to Halt Deportation of House Cleaners

Trade and Industry Minister Ehud Olmert yesterday rejected a request by Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce President Uriel Lynn that the state refrain from deporting thousands of foreigners working illegally as house cleaners. Lynn pointed out in his request that while he agreed with the policy of reducing the number of foreign workers to combat unemployment, access to cleaning help allowed more Israeli women to enter the work force. Olmert said that Israeli women would be willing to work as house cleaners in return for reasonable wages. (Haim Bior)
