Police: Suspected Pedophiles Likely Involved in at Least 20 Other Cases

Police source says films documenting sexual relations with young men, believed to be minors, found in fourth suspect's home.

Police told the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court that some of the suspects beleived to have sexually abused a 13-year-old boy over two years are also believed to have commited indecent acts and sodomy in at least 20 other cases. "We have gathered evidence from five other minor boys, who say they had sexual relations with the main suspect," Police Staff Sergeant Major Ya'akov Bernard told the court.

Bernard asked the court for a 10-day remand of seven of the suspects arrested earlier this week in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of the boy.

Attorney Avi Cohen, representing the main suspect, asked for a ban on the release of his client's name, and said that the man had attempted suicide in his cell. Attorneys for the other suspects also asked that their clients' names be withheld at least until they are indicted.

The second suspect, a computer engineer, is suspected of sodomy, an indecent act, and of making threats, Bernard said, as well as of illegal use of the police data base. The suspect's attorney, Revital Swid, asked that her client be released because he has no criminal record.

Bernard said dozens of films were found in the home of the fourth suspect, including some documenting sexual relations with young men who are believed to be minors. He also said pedophilic material involving small children was found on the computer of one of the suspects, who works with children. The mother of one suspect burst into tears and asked the judge to send him for psychiatric evaluation and not incarcerate him. Another suspect collapsed at the beginning of the hearing and was hospitalized.

The sports coach and the attorney whom police arrested at the home of one of the suspects arrived toward the end of the hearing. The attorney told Haaretz: "It's a pity that my name was connected to a shocking sexual affair, that of course I have nothing to do with."
