Last week MK Haim Jelin of Yesh Atid put up a financed post (funded by our tax shekels) about the fire in the Be'eri forest set off by a firebomb tied to a kite from Gaza. The post by Jelin, who lives in the southern Israeli kibbutz of Nahal Oz and used to lead the Eshkol regional council by Gaza, was concise and angry.

“The day after, I went in the morning to the point where the fire had broken out because of the kite terrorism," he wrote. "It hurts the heart to see the ANZAC Memorial forest burnt down. Rehabilitating it and the wild animals who couldn’t escape will take years.”

Jelin added photos and a video shot in black and white (possibly to highlight the devastation) to his post, showing ruined trees and smoking fields, as if to say it’s happening again, the good old Holocaust.

This man has lived for decades in close proximity to the biggest prison in the world, where we Israelis, including he, are its armed guards.

In the past we did it with the army and with settlers on the inside. Now we do it through suffocation and fences on the outside and bombing raids from the air. But he, a member in the Knesset that has become a bastion of fools, because of his proximity to the fences surrounding that jail – he can also observe and sense, unlike we who keep a safe distance from the truth, what happens within. It is a vast prison of desperate people. Inside it live, if you could call it that, about 2 million people in dreadful conditions of overcrowding, unemployment and want, who are constantly on the brink of falling – or not – to their deaths, depending entirely on our whims.

And an elected representative of that public, and that public is us, bewails the savaged trees and the burned flowers and the hedgehogs that lost their lives and the tortoises that lost their shells; meanwhile soldiers from among his people deliberately lash at, and slay, dozens and hundreds of unarmed people, whose only weapon is pitiful burning kites that singe our fields a little – while facing an armed state, armed from head to toe, for example with 4,000 tanks, 700 jets and 200 atom bombs (according to the foreign press, strictly the foreign press). Has obtuseness no limit?

People are dying like flies, likes foxes being hunted, like plastic ducks at an amusement park shooting gallery. They’re not merely dying, we’re killing them and you’re bewailing a truncated tree and an orphaned hare?

Maybe two recent pictures should be shown one by the other, for the sake of comparison and comprehension. One would be the picture of the Palestinian amputee shot to death while demonstrating by the Gaza fence that separates your protected, peaceful life, MK Jelin, from the miserable dog’s life that you forced on your Palestinian neighbors. The other picture would be of the three smitten trees that burned to death in the Holocaust forced on them by the dastardly Palestinians with their “kite terrorism,” which you uploaded, bitterly bemoaning the cruel fate of the trees and weeds, may the Lord avenge their spilled sap.
