Gantz Nearly Became the Joke of the Election, but Israel Still Needs Him as a Gatekeeper

He was supposed to have been the joke of the recent election, with a reasonable chance of disappearing from the political landscape. His entry into politics led half the people to hate him, and when he joined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government the circle of his haters grew to three quarters of the people. His comrades who joined him in the government abandoned him one by one – lawmakers Gabi Ashkenazi, Avi Nissenkorn, Zvi Hauser, Yoaz Hendel, Merav Cohen, Yizhar Shai and others. One hundred and thirty senior IDF officers who served with him and alongside him published a petition calling on him to drop out of the Knesset race and go home. Everyone fled from him like a leper; some believed he would crash and they didn’t want his failure to touch them.
