Police Arrest Suspected Murderer Who Escaped From Mental Hospital

Eliyahu Fahima, 46, was declared unfit to stand trial for 2002 murder of a yeshiva student, fled from a medical escort while being led to a Haifa court.

A convicted murderer who escaped from a mental hospital on Wednesday was arrested Saturday night in Tiberias.

Eliyahu Fahima, 46, had been hospitalized in the Shar Menashe psychiatric hospital since he was found unfit to stand trial for the 2002 murder of a yeshiva student.

Fahima was brought to a Haifa court Wednesday morning for a hearing over a request he made to attain a furlough from the psychiatric hospital. As Fahima was being led to the courthouse by an escort of medical personnel, he managed to break free and disappear from the scene.

Police launched a furious search for Fahima Wednesday, focusing mainly on Haifa and Hadera until his arrest on Saturday.
