The Israel Opera will be offering a free outdoor performance of "Carmen" in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park on July 29. The production of Georges Bizet's opera will be based on a performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The Israel Opera performed the same production last year at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center. Reprising their roles from that performance will be Rinat Shaham in the title part and Scott Piper as Don Jose. David Stern will conduct. (Hagai Hitron )

The Israeli flamenco dancer Silvia Duran has been bestowed with a citation on behalf of the Spanish king Sunday. At a ceremony in Tel Aviv, Spain's ambassador to Israel, Alvaro Iranzo, awarded Duran the Commendation of the Order of Civil Merit on behalf of Juan Carlos I for "contributing to the culture of Spain and the Spanish people." Duran, who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, immigrated to Israel in 1975 after an extended stay in Spain. Over her decades-long career she has appeared before monarchs and heads of state the world over, and guided generations of young dancers from her eponymous studio in Tel Aviv. (Elad Samorzik )

The New York-based Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, credited with popularizing modern concert dance, has scheduled a pair of fall performance dates in Israel. The 60-member troupe will give two performances in Tel Aviv in late October, including Ailey's signature 1960 work "Revelations" - one of the most renowned modern dance pieces ever choreographed. The company, now in its 52nd year of activity, revolutionized concert dance in the 1960s and '70s and played a pioneering role in introducing African-American themes to the mainstream performance repertoire.
