A recent New York Times editorial lamented Israel’s fragile democracy, faithfully reflecting the attitudes of America’s elites. But Israel’s democracy would be better strengthened by reading Israel with greater nuance, and to apply pressure also on the Palestinians rather than only on the Israelis.
To state publicly that what we have in Judea and Samaria is not an occupation might be legally justifiable. But it would also signal that it is time to give up thinking about a different Middle East.
