Thousands of Muslims from across Israel and the West Bank arrived in Jerusalem on Friday morning to attend the second Friday prayers of Ramadan in the Old City's Al-Aqsa mosque.

Last week Friday prayers of Ramadan passed peacefully, where tens of thousands gathered to pray at Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Israel captured East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East War and has later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and during the month adult Muslims fulfil a religious obligation to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual relations during daylight hours.
