Palestinian in Gaza Sets Himself on Fire in Apparent Protest

Video shows burning man cursing the Strip's government, and a witness says he attempted suicide because of economic distress

A Palestinian set himself ablaze early Sunday morning in Gaza City, apparently in protest against the government in the Gaza Strip. In a video of the incident, the man is heard cursing the government.. According to a witness, the young man sought money and food for his relatives and attempted suicide because of his economic distress.

Social media reports in Gaza said he was moderately wounded and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Videos disseminated on social media show him setting himself on fire and shouting in pain. People who were in the vicinity rushed to try to put the fire out.

Israeli defense officials have in recent months warned that the conditions in Gaza are desperate, and that rising unemployment is increasing residents' frustration and anger. A third of the Gaza Strip's residents receive basic assistance from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, while another third receives aid from charities that are mostly run by Hamas.
