Eleven Palestinian protesters were wounded by Israeli military fire during clashes along the border in northern Gaza on Monday, Gaza's Health Ministry said.

A total of 29 demonstrators have been evacuated to hospitals in Gaza, the ministry added.

Some 7,000 Palestinians demonstrated along the border fence near Kibbutz Zikim. Clashes erupted between Israeli military forces and protesters, some of whom hurled explosive devices, grenades and firebombs toward Israeli troops.

Palestinian protesters claim that they reached an empty IDF sniper post after illegally crossing the border during clashes.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit released a statement Tuesday, saying "There was no breach into Israeli territory or damage to active security infrastructure in this incident. The rioters hurled charges and frag grenades, torched tires and threw rocks at IDF soldiers."

The statement then said "Additionally, one of the rioters crossed into Israeli territory for a short period of time, set fire to an abandoned military post near the fence with a molotov cocktail." It said only a camouflage net was damaged.

"The event was contained in surveillance and gunfire from start to finish and at no stage went out of control. The soldiers hit dozens of rioters whilst using riot dispersal measues and live gunfire at rioters in accordance with open-fire protocols," the statement said.

The clashes came a day after the Israeli military said it struck a group of Palestinians who launched incendiary balloons from southern Gaza into Israel.

According to a report in Gaza, the airstrike hit east of Rafah, a refugee camp and city in the southern Gaza Strip.

Gaza authorities said on Friday that three Palestinians, one of them a teenage boy, were killed by live Israeli fire during a protest at the Israel-Gaza border.
