Two Palestinian teenagers were killed on Thursday in clashes with Israeli security forces, one on the border with the Gaza Strip and the other in the West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The ministry identified the fatality in Gaza as 16-year-old Ameer Abu Masaed, who was reportedly shot in the chest east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp, which is adjacent to the Israeli border fence. Sources in the Gaza Strip said dozens of Palestinian youth were taking part at the time in a protest at the border against U.S. President Donald Trump's December announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The other fatality was identified as 17-year-old Ali Omar Qino, who was reportedly killed by Israeli army fire in the West Bank village of Iraq Burin, south of Nablus.

The Israeli army said it was aware of the report of the death and four wounded in the West Bank clash and was investigating. The army said that the soldiers came under attack by rioters throwing rocks and responded with gunfire.

The clashes in Burin erupted during Israeli army sweeps in search for the gunmen who on Tuesday killed Raziel Shevach, a father of six from the West Bank outpost of Havat Gilad. Israeli military sources said the soldiers conducting the sweeps were attacked and responded with fire. Shevach was driving on Route 60, a main highway in the West Bank, when his vehicle was apparently targeted by gunmen in a passing car.

Sources in Burin told Haaretz that clashes had broken out at a checkpoint that the military set up to the east of the village. Witnesses say the teen was shot in the head by live gunfire. He was taken to a hospital in Nablus in critical condition but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A local resident in Burin said it appeared that there had been a change in Israeli army's rules of engagement there. In previous clashes in the area in recent weeks, there were many wounded. It didnt feel like the soldiers are shooting to kill. This time it's different.
