Abbas Released From Ramallah Hospital After 'Routine Tests'
Source tells Haaretz Palestinian President's visit was not out of emergency and that he is in good health
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was discharged from a Ramallah hospital Saturday morning after passing a series of mexical examinations. A Palestinian source told Haaretz that the hospital visit was not out of emergency but for routine tests.
Abbas, 82, underwent cardiac catheterization, a procedure in which a thin plastic tube is inserted into the heart, for the removal of heart or vein blockages last October. After his release from the hospital, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that Abbas' health was very good and he had passed all medical exams.
Abbas had similar procedures in 2008 and 2005 and underwent prostate surgery in the United States in 2001. There have been rumors about the health of Abbas in recent years.
The Palestinian leader has held office since 2005, though his presidential term expired in January 2009. Because he has not appointed a deputy, it is unclear who will inherit his position.
