As Palestinians Protest Death of Abbas Opponent, Women Are Assaulted in Response

A clearly sexist dimension – attacking and harassing women – has accompanied the suppression of the demonstrations in Ramallah over the death of political activist Nizar Banat, who died while he was being detained by Palestinian Authority security men.

Journalists and other Palestinian women who took pictures of the protests with their phones were an immediate target; their phones were confiscated. This was one of the things noted in a press release from the forum of Palestinian nongovernmental organizations in the fight to stop violence against women.
