French jetman Vince Reffet successfully took off from the ground and flew high above Dubai on Friday.
Reffet, equipped with a carbon fibre wing powered by four mini jet engines, flew to 1,800 meters above sea level. Video of the stunt, which is part of Expo 2020, was first posted to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai’s, Instagram account.
After demonstrating control by flying five metres above the sea and making small turns, he made his main flight.
Rising 100 metres every eight seconds, he finished the three-minute flight with a loop at 1,800 metres before opening his parachute and dropping back to earth.
The equipment allows the pilot to reach speeds of 400 kilometres/hour and well as being able to hover, change direction and perform loops.
Reffet was fitted with a pyrotechnic safety parachute in case of engine failure at low altitude and more than 50 preparatory flights were made ahead of the event
