Iran denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's UN remarks as "shameless and ignorant" and said his speech on Tuesday showed his lack of knowledge about Tehran's fight against terrorism, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"Trump's shameless and ignorant remarks, in which he ignored Iran's fight against terrorism, displays his lack of knowledge and unawareness," Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying.

In Trump's Tuesday remarks to the UN General Assembly, he said that "the Iranian government masks a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy" thus "turn[ing] a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed and chaos. The longest-suffering victims of Iran's leaders are in fact its own people."

He continued, calling the Iran nuclear deal "an embarrasment to the United States and I don't think you've heard the last of it, believe me," recieving applause from the Israeli delegation's. Trump said that Iran's behavior is in contrast to that of many of its neighbors, such as Saudi Arabia,  who vowed to fight terror.

Trump further criticized Iran for calling for "death to America" and for "the destruction of Israel," saying that "it is time to expose and hold responsible those countries who support and finance terror groups."
