According to the report, the eight militants were killed during a shootout between the Egyptian police and Islamic State fighters, as Egyptian forces stormed an Islamic State cell in northern Sinai West of El-Arish. The Islamic State cell was based in a house in the tourist neighborhood of Rasiah.
"The terrorists opened fire at the [Egyptian security] forces" said the report, attributing the information to a security source, resulting in 8 dead. The corpses were kept in order to identify them, added the report.
Egyptian security forces have been carrying out a campaign against the Islamic State offshoot based in Sinai, who have perpetrated a number of attacks against civilians. 305 were killed in a Sufi mosque in El-Arish on November 25, when an Islamic State affiliate detonated bombs and opened fire on worshippers.
