Senator Ted Cruz said on Sunday that a rabbi in Israel likes his beard and thinks it could "promote Middle East peace." Cruz tweeted that the rabbi of a friend studying at a yeshiva in Israel took a liking to his newly grown beard which has gone viral in recent weeks.

Cruz tweeted: "His rabbi told him he liked my beard, elaborating 'It gives Cruz a Talmudic & Rabbinic look & presence that will put the fear of the Lord into Israel’s enemies.'"

The Texas senator went on to call the comments "a bit much."

In the past Ted Cruz has pushed for pro-Israel legislation, including introducing a bill to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem just days before Donald Trump was sworn into office.

American rabbi and writer Danya Ruttenberg was quick to shutdown Cruz's remarks, saying "I have a Rabbinic look, not you."
