Five Iran-backed militia fighters were killed in an airstrike on the Syria-Iraq border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Wednesday night.
It remains unknown who is responsible for the strike on a military compound and several posts in the Syrian city of Albukamal in the eastern part of the Deir al-Zor province.

The explosions were probably caused by long-range missiles or drone strikes, the observatory said.
In another incident, an Iranian-backed militia headquarters also in Albukamal was hit, and blasts were reported in the nearby al-Jalala desert. The observatory hasn't reported casualties in that strike.
