Man Who Killed Daughter Kills Self in Prison

A man accused of killing his 3-year-old daughter committed suicide in jail yesterday, by jumping headfirst off a three-meter-high wall.

Assaf Goldring took advantage of his regular walk around the Sharon Prison courtyard around 3 P.M. yesterday. Goldring's arrest, and the story of how he allegedly suffocated his daughter Noa two months ago, amid a messy divorce, shocked the country.

Goldring allegedly tried to kill himself immediately after killing his daughter, and attempted suicide several more times while in custody.

"The act proves that Assaf had a conscience and could nor bear what he did," his lawyer, Gad Zilbershlag, told Haaretz. "It is surprising he did [commit suicide], as he was known to be at risk. Nevertheless Assaf succeeded in ending his life in a manner that is worth investigating."

Zilbershlag said Goldring was in psychological distress, and said he had told authorities that Goldring had said several times he wanted to commit suicide.

A psychiatrist examined him and found him fit to stand trial, though his lawyer said he was not in a clear state of mind at the time of the murder and had taken a large number of pills beforehand.

Magen David Adom emergency services reported that they were called to the prison to treat a prisoner with a severe head injury.

"The prison medical staff brought us to the yard, where we saw a young man lying next to a concrete edge. The man was bleeding heavily from his head," said MDA paramedic Yiftah Karni.

"The staff members who first found him tried to revive him. Regretfully, by the time we got to him, he had no signs of life, no heartbeat and no breathing. After several minutes, a MDA doctor pronounced him dead," said the paramedic.

This is the latest of several prison suicides over the past six weeks. The most sensational involved TV personality Dudu Topaz, who hung himself in the shower of his prison cell.

"Someone who wants to end their life will succeed sooner or later, even under supervision," the Israel Prison Service said.
